Custom Icon Problem

Post by intech »

Greetings from Osaka. I have been using SC for a fairly long time and am just trying out PcHelpWare.

Today I was working on a custom configuration including a custom background and custom icon file. I created a custom icon file using IcoFX for Windows. The icon file has the following icon types inside it:

256x256, 32 bit colour
48x48, 32 bit colour
32x32, 32 bit colour
24x24, 32 bit colour
16x16, 32 bit colour

PcHelpWare accepts the icon file just fine, and creates the executable file.

Windows Explorer (XP) lets you format your file lists in different ways, and depending on this the icon size changes. When viewed using these layouts the icon displays correctly: Icons, List, Details

However, when I view the file in Thumbnail or Tile mode I get the standard UVNC icon (yellow background with lettering in black).

Oddly if I extract the icon from the EXE file it only shows my custom icon as being embedded in the EXE, not the UVNC icon. The EXE file contains the following sizes of my custom icon:

256x256, 32 bit colour
48x48, 32 bit colour
32x32, 32 bit colour
24x24, 32 bit colour

The 16x16 size was not included but I doubt that is the problem as 16x16 is not used by Thumbnail or Tile mode.

I have tested this on two Windows XP computers and the same thing happens on both. I have also rebuilt the Windows icon cache on both computers in case that was the issue but nothing changed.

Also of note, using the standard PcHelpWare icon does not cause this problem. The standard icon file only has a 32x32 16 color icon inside it.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what might be going on?

I added 256 colour icons to the .ICO file and it seems to have fixed the problem. As far as I can tell Windows is still displaying the 32bit colour versions (they look a lot better), but the UVNC icon no longer shows up anywhere.

I'm still curious what might be causing this to happen though!
