Linux viewer using SecureVNCplugin.dsm

While not technically a newbie with uVNC, I have a server running on a Vista host configured to use the SecureVNC plugin. The server was created, and works well for the needs of one of my remote users, who runs the viewer natively on a Windows host also.

However, I would also like to be able to access the server, but my OS preference is exclusively on Linux (Mint v.12 and Ubuntu 11.04 primarily). I have not been able to locate a native Linux client (i.e., 'viewer') that seems to be able to accommodate the server's use of the SecureVNCplugin.dsm.

I've installed the Windows viewer via Wine with shared key and it to works to a point. However, after I successfully log in I can not get the desktop to display at all...





I reckon this has something to do with the Wine virtual framebuffer, but honestly haven't a clue, which is why I'd like to know if there is either a native Linux viewer I can use with secureVNCplugin.dsm.

I've read the java view doesn't work with the encryption plugins.

Any direction/help appreciated...

You should probably go the wrapper approach (SSH or something similar) to secure your VNC connections cross-platform.

I presume that implies I must install a secure shell server on my Window's VNC server. That would only work for me and greatly complicate the number of VNC clients I support who already run the uVNC client with the secure VNC plugin.

Ideally, I (think) I'm looking for a linux client that supports SecureVNCplugin.dsm. ??

I know you are; you said as much in the first post. But I don't think such a thing exists, so I offered an alternate approach.

You could also just run a Windows session in a virtual machine on your Linux box.

UltraVNC is limited to Windows. SecureVNC is limited to Windows.

I'll try and post results when I have time, but that involves more effort than I can invest now and a Windows license which defeats the purpose. I suspect I'll have the same issue as running with Wine - i.e., not enough horse power with the virtual frame buffer. uVNC will load and connect with wine just fine, I just get a blank desktop. Maybe if I had better grafx hardware as I'm currently stuck with the Intel Mobile 4 Chipset IGC.

According to the documentation, SSVNC can handle reverse connections using the SecureVNC plugin. I can verify that it works with the MSRC4 plugin, but I haven't managed to make it work with SecureVNC. Then again, I haven't managed to make Windows work with that either, so if you get it going, let me know how you did it!

A 'reverse' connection? Is that one instantiated from the server to the client?

Thanks for the link. I have tried this method with TightVNC and haven't yet been able to get a connection.
