"Diagonal" display

Using VNC 1.0.9.6.2 server in Windows XP installed on VMWare virtual machine.
Images on clients (several machines, XP, Win7, Windows Server 2003) are diagonaly distorted in way that every successive image row is shifted by one pixel to the right. The mouse cursor is sinchronyzed with display (folows same diagonal distortion).
I have a screenshoot but see no way to attach it.

Tried to change various capture options on server without success.

Any idea?

The cause is that screen pitch used by vmware isn't the same as the screen width.
Vmware allow screen with a size not /4 ( vmware tools)

Try 32 bit or a width devidable by 4

You are right. Setting resolution to 1024*768 solved the problem.
I was wrong with mouse in original post, the mouse positioning was not distorted.
