skewed screen ?

any thoughts ?......sometimes the video recorded when played back is "skewed" and virtually illegible. Any ideas as to what causes this ?

This program looks a lot like CamStudio, which is free/open source. If you've "borrowed" source code from them, can you please comply with the GPL & release your source? If you haven't borrowed from them, can you please make a statement regarding how the similarities between the two products originated?. Thanks--this looks useful.

Thanks for the response. The way back machine does have the text you snipped from 2002, which I didn't realize.

By 2003, the license changed to the GPL.

You first released this in 2005. If you used a version released after 2002, you must still comply with the GPL. However, assuming you used the 2002 version as the basis: I apologize for the misunderstanding.

BTW, when I download their Setup and their source file zip from here:
http://www.camstudio.org/

The only licence if find is the one Rudi posted above (in the src zip) and almost the same in the CamStudio install directory

So I don't understand how even the current CamStudio can be GPL at all:
the GPL licence is nowhere in the files they distribute

I think the GPL licence MUST be in the distributed software package, easy to find or even displayed during the setup.

Richard,

CamStudio was originally released by a company called RenderSoft,
they released it as a bsd style license (there latest version was v2.0)
RenderSoft sold the software and stopped the develoment. (2003)

Then someone else took the old Camstudio code and hosted it on sourceforge and changed the license to GPL.....

That version has always been GPLed. The site has claimed this and inspect vscap20s/Producer/swfsource/actioncompiler/swf4compiler.tab.cpp and vscap20s/Producer/swfsource/actioncompiler/swf5compiler.tab.cpp
Anything that links those will also be GPLed.
Thoose files are auto generated from swf4compiler.y and swf5compiler.y,
nobody can claim GPL on it....the only thing you see is that they are made with a bison parser.
Even if the GPL was mentioned in all files, it would be resticted to all changes made after 2003...

I just follow the license of the original author.

Just wondering, why do you want the source of the " screenrecorder"...
Is it for an opensource project at Caltech ?

Not quite--as per my links above, RenderSoft was the first to change the copyright to GPL (from the BSD-like license). They did this for v. 1.8 and 2.0. Then v. 2.0 was adopted by Nick Smith as a sourceforge project & he retained the GPL.

(Parenthetically: RenderSoft was purchased by eHelp, who released a v. 2.1 that has all-but-disappeared & eHelp was purchased by Macromedia.)
Just wondering, why do you want the source of the " screenrecorder"...
I use a combination of CamStudio & vnc2swf (both free/opensource). ScreenRecorder seems like a good idea, but it is limited enough that I wouldn't use it. Someone mentioned it on the CamStudio blog as a possible GPL violation (which, per this discussion, it isn't) & I did wonder if it could be leveraged by Nick or someone else to make the GPLed CamStudio better.
Is it for an opensource project at Caltech ?
Not that I know of--I'm not at Cal-Tech & my personal development time is limited.

The licening is very confusing and hope they add the correct license
and headers in the code of 2.5 to make this clear.
If people download the source zip, they are bound to the included license,
independed of what you tell on the website.

The only reasons screenrecorder isn't GPL is that i want to be able to bundle the drivers with it. Else, 2 seperate downloads are needed and
people need to merge them on disk. Already to complicate fore some...

My own time is limited, so i'm going to release the source code as BSD or GPL. Then Nick can take a look and decide if he want to add the driver
as addon.

Nice util!

I am looking for a screen recorder that I can automate:

- start recording when windows starts (start recording from command line arguments)
- stop recording, pause recording (from command line arguments), etc
- run as a service

Is this only accomplishable with autoIt as of now?

Thanks,
John

Screen Recorder Problems

Post by MiekSwim07 »

Hello, I recently recorded something and when I tried to play the video, it said the file was corrupt. I then used Media Coder and was able to play the video. The video is cut in half and it is slanted. How do I fix this?

I can't try to record this again because it was a one time thing.

Thanks, Michael

The recoder use a standard codex to record stuff.
The recording and playback is done by the MS media engine, our software just provide the pixels.

Try the use vitualdub or some other program that can handle corrupt media files. You will have more luck for an answer in a specific "avi" forum.

I recorded some file using encoder "divx", "..."
The file is corrupt, is there a way/tool to correct it.

Thanks for the suggestion.

How can I find out what mediacodec I used to record it?

What does this mean?

This is an excellent tool, thanks.

I was surprised that the size of the AVI file does not change a lot when I change the settings. I found that the sound is not compressed. whatever value I use in audio options (tried PCM and mp3) the result is the same :

10 sec test record without sound : 500kB
same test with sound : 2500kb.
This means that 10s sound takes 2MB, which is the expected size for uncompressed 44KHz stereo, when I used 22 kHz mono (expected 440 kB uncompressed), and mp3 compression with 32kbps (expected about 40kB).

I don't see there is any option to activate compression. Did I miss something ? When I stop the recording I see the message "compressing audio". Perhaps the program does not find the compressor ?

Screen Recorder does not compress sound

Post by dysmas »

Screen recorder is an excellent tool, thanks.

I found that the sound is not compressed. whatever value I use in audio options (tried PCM, mp3 and others) the result is the same :

10 sec test record without sound : 500kB
same test with sound : 2500kb.
This means that 10s sound takes 2MB, which is the expected size for uncompressed 44KHz stereo (CD quality).
I had used 22 kHz mono (expected 440 kB uncompressed), and mp3 compression with 32kbps (expected about 40kB).

When I stop the recording I see the message "compressing audio". So the program really compress the audio, but the recorded data is the uncompressed source.

I tried with camStudio. CamStudio compresses the sound correctly. Nevertheless there is a synchronization problem. I didn't test for long because camStudio is so slow, compared to Screen Recorder on my old 1GHz PIII.

There are a lot of programs in Internet, which can compress sound. I prefer to use Sound Forge for compressing sounds.

This has nothing to do with the problem. The question is using Screen Recorder to record screen activity, image + sound. Both are stored in a AVI (Audio Video Interlaced) file, but this file is huge if sound is activated, because the sound is uncompressed. Sound Forge cannot compress an AVI file. If I am wrong, tell it, I would be interested.

No playback is perfectly OK (image and sound). The only problem is that the file is big because sound is uncompressed.
It works well, yes, as camStudio (and much similar) but with the same problem : screen update is slow, and on my PIII the mouse is very slow. ScreenRecorder is MUCH faster because of the use of the video driver.

I am using ScreenRecorder and I can record the video without problems, but when I select Enable Record Audio, I can record the audio but no the video in the AVI file.

What is the optimal combination for audio and video codecs?

audio is raw pcm -> big file
video: use an encoder that support size end depth, i have good results with divx

After recording you need to make the file smaller (audio stream is huge)
Use a opensource tool like virtualdub, this can compress the audio and generate a divx+mp3 file.

I had this problem in the beginning. I discovered that reading the file in a different video player, the video was OK. I don't remember which video player I was using but it was not windows's standard. Try with a different player.

Use a opensource tool like virtualdub, this can compress the audio and generate a divx+mp3 file.
This is exactly the way I used to solve the problem.

What is confusing is that Video Recorder has audio options for compression. But presently they don't work.

1) open the file in virtualDub
2) In video menu, choose "direct stream copy"
3) In audio menu, select "full processing mode", then choose "compression" and select the parameters you want.
4) in the file menu select save as AVI, you are done in a minute.

You can also change the video compression if you like.

Rudi De Vos,

Is this product discontinued?
If not: Ultra ScreenRecorder (? version: downloaded approx 2 weeks ago) is not able to record SketchUp's 7 workspace area. ScreenRecorder settings are default. Capture was done in "whole screen" mode (if capturing screen segment then resulting output video is distorted and very slow). One of default encoders available on Windows XP SP3 x32 was used for the capture.

p.s.: CamStudio (version from camstudio-org) captures SketchUp's 7 workspace area well.

I downloaded Ultra ScreenRecorder from http://www.uvnc.com/screenrecorder/ . During installation 3 drivers were installed. Not sure whether they were Rel1.00 or Rel 1.01 or something else.
Can you tell me where can i get Rel1.00 or Rel 1.01 and how to install this driver (standalone .sys file?) ?
