I've searched a bit and I don't know what keywords to search for. I offer remote computer repair and currently use logmein and crossloop (vnc offspring)
I like crossloops ability, but still has a lengthy installation and is slow and I must pay to have file transfer available.

Is there a version, that is a simple drop in, and you don't have to configure firewalls? I work with very computer illeterate people and they can barely handle the install routine of crossloop or logmein.

I'm not looking for it to be on all the time (but optional) I just want them to be able to run it and it autoconfigure. Or is the hopes and dreams for everyone?

There are at least two very good projects that accomplish what you want, SCPrompt and ChunkVNC, both hosted and/or discussed here.

The double firewall penetration ability (both viewer and server behind unmodifiable routers) is reliant upon you running a statically reachable repeater. ChunkVNC bundles a copy of that repeater. But it's just a single executable; Unix version available too.

With ChunkVNC, if you can, hold off just a bit for the next version. For one thing, the newer UltraVNC 1.0.8.2 has some problems in my opinion, and the next ChunkVNC might (?) bundle 1.0.8.0 instead.

Edit: Also, if you just need the clients to connect to YOU, and you're in a fixed place, you don't need the repeater (and by extension ChunkVNC) in the mix. In that case SCPrompt would probably be the easiest way to go. Just like the traditional "UltraVNC SC" project, it lets you create single executables that will unpack on the client's machine and connect back to you. (Chunk does something similar but is essentially married to the repeater for roaming flexibility.)

Even the regular UltraVNC server can be used in "SC" (Single Click) mode these days, but I honestly have never tried it.

Hi!
I have had great success with TeamViewer for the same application.
All you need to to is download teamviewer onto your computer, and then have the person on the other end of the phone go to teamviewer.com and download it. There is no confguration required, it has just like 2 or 3 mouse clicks to "next" in the install. It is very simple and easy to use. Once they have it installed (no reboot required) just get them to give you the id number and password, type it into your computer, and go!
