How can I improve the connection?

Post by Gumby »

I think SC is excellent and have got many companies to stop using their current solution to use this far superiour solution. I have designed a website that has links to saved VNC connections on it (1-10) Then I made a tool to automatically add the page as an active desktop. So the Techs will have a relatively small rectangle at the bottom of the screen with 10 different 3d buttons they can click on for VNC. Then I have the help.exe file loaded on the page also. The tech sends the customer to http://mywebsite.com/help.exe and tells them which # to click on to connect. The tech then clicks the coresponding # on his desktop and is now connected. (very nice) now for the problem....

When we are connecting to users desktops there is grey splotches on the screen and you have to click the refresh button every 2 or 3 seconds just to be able to see what you are doing on the remote computer. I thought it was maybe because of a slow connection but I tested it with the server on a cable modem and the viewer on a t1 and it still did this. It is very choppy. Is there a way that I can add the video driver or something to the server install to make this connection better? I don't care if the file is 2MB if I can get a better connection. If sacraficing the quality keeps the file small I would rather sacrifice file size. Is there a workaround to this or another way to make it have a better connection?

Hi,

what versions are you using, as I don't have this problem (SC - 512 ADSL : Viewer 2Mb ADSL).

The recomended Viewer to use is RC19.4, however I have used RC19.6 with no problems (other than file transfer).

As you say file size is not an issue you could always use the standard Server with the command line options and then perform a reverse connection and make use of the Video Driver, check my post [topic=532]HERE[/topic] for an example INNO Setup Script to use.

Hope it helps.

I just tried it on a new computer. I installed 19.5 and I got the same thing. The remote computer was using a very slow dsl connection and I tested on a dialup connection (real bad) all xp pro sp2 machines. Prior testing with 2000 pro and 98 machines also... When I connect to a machine using the normal server it works perfect. When I connect to them and they are using SC it is slow. I also noticed the other day while nobody was using SC or VNC the repeater was using almost 100% CPU. I shut it down and reopened and everything was fine. I havn't had the same problem happen again

Hi Gumby,

To check the version you are running.

Viewer:
Run the Viewer in Listen Mode, right click the tray icon and select 'About VNCViewer...'

SC Version:
Start a Connection and when you get the Icon in the System Tray, again Right Click and select 'About'

Another thing to check is with the viewer in Listen Mode, Right click the tray Icon and select 'Default Connection Options' The Format and encoding would probably be best set to 'Autoselect best settings'.

I have tested with 19.5 and 19.6... Are the settings i posted above correct? Do I need to change something? I see grey splotches everytime I connect using SC... If needed I can send a screen shot... The machine I am on now says viewer v1.0.0 RC 19 built jan 27 2005 21:20:43

Just stick with RC19.4. The newer ones are too buggy for the time being.

well it will continue to be buggy if you dont tell them what the issue is.

its more for them to fix and re-release items and make the product as a whole better..

not just ignore it and let the devs figure everything out by themselves :-) Of course I dont suggest you do this in a corporate environment.. just a test environment like at home with 3 computers... like me :-)

I would prefer to use the current revision and figure out why this seems to only be a problem for me. Is there some setting I can easily change to improve the connection? I don't think this is a bug as it is only happening to me apparently. Any ideas? Is there something wrong with my settings above?
