GoToMyPC's Not So Great Either

This forum is for VNC related products | This means not only UltraVNC | It even is allowed to announce or describe commercial (and of course non-commercial) programs here (but not anywhere else in the forum)

GoToMyPC's Not So Great Either

Post by B »

While many of us (im)patiently await the new UltraVNC repeater and various ChunkVNC-ish projects that promise functionality similar to LogMeIn's or GoToMyPC's or TeamViewer's, I thought I'd mention something about GoToMyPC. I use and manage the "Corporate" edition, and frankly it kind of stinks. (I prefer LogMeIn Free.)

The speed is still much better than VNC, but its management features are terrible:

. The ONLY way to add a new user is to e-mail him or her via the GoToMyPC portal.

. You CANNOT change a user's e-mail address once assigned. You have to delete the whole user!

. You CANNOT change the user to whom is assigned a particular PC. You have to UNINSTALL and the REINSTALL the software AT THAT PC. (You ALSO have to delete the PC from the management portal.)

. The ONLY way to change ANYTHING significant is UNinstalling and REinstalling.

. You CANNOT centrally manage user passwords OR the relationships between users and PCs. (You can't even reset a password.)

. You CANNOT configure a PC, have it added to the "Corporate" manager's portal, and later assign it to an arbitrary user.

. You CANNOT limit access by time of day or day of the week.

These are all things that SHOULD be centrally managed in my opinion.

All in all, I find GoToMyPC Corporate to be primitive. VNC based developers really DON'T have far to go to mimic these minimal level of functionality.

So thanks to people like Rudi (primarily of course) and JDaus and Supercoe and Rat for putting so much work into a real, free, open source remote control solution.

Thanks B, I for one really appreciate it when you get some thanks for all the time you put into something ...

I have to echo B's comments about GoToMyPC. Our organization has also had better results with LogMeIn. But UltraVNC seems to offer a lot of promise and we are looking forward to evaluating it.

We've just started evaluating the equivalent "LogMeIn Central" setup and it's freaking leaps and bounds ahead of GoToMyPC Corporate, and nearly half the price at current discounts. You can see my rave at https://forum.ultravnc.net/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=28397

Side note, I found out the other day that logmein free can be used for commercial use. It is feature limited and doesn't seem to have an single click function (I haven't tested, just reading) but hey the price is right!

Interesting... their terms and conditions describe a distinction for Hamachi commercial v. non-commercial, but NOT a distinction for LogMeIn per se. And the only thing close to official word on the subject is at http://community.logmeinrescue.com/t5/F ... td-p/41320

Of course we'll be as nice as possible :smileyhappy: We have a great bunch of Super-Users on this Community with a wealth of knowledge, so I hope they'll be able to come to your rescue in the future.

You're free to use LogMeIn Free in a commercial setting. LogMeIn Free is truly free.

Best,
Which is a big relief, since I've used them for commercial purposes for a long time, and I had thought I was abusing the privilege! LogMeIn really deserves support from the "IT community" -- they've been very generous with their services for a long time. I feel good recommending them in our business, as per my other thread.
